Electronic Waste (E-waste)

E-Waste is electronic waste, old electronic equipment that is no longer working or useful. Common electronic products such as  mobile phones, computers, televisions and others that have reached the end of their useful life and are marked for disposal or recycling becoming E-waste.

Electronic equipment becomes out of date quickly in our modern age, many people upgrade their phone once a year and consider upgrading other electronic devices. Many people can relate to dropping their phone or tablet and cracking the screen or even worse, sometimes things need to be repaired and new parts replace old parts. Of course it's not just consumers who add to the waste but also industry through updating equipment to keep up to date.

One of the most famous E-waste incidents is the Atari ET game dump, the E-waste was then later dug up and recycled. The problem however didn't start there, as long as there have been electronics there has been E-waste. Some examples of early E-waste would be copper wire and light globes. As we've moved forward in time we have improved our recycling techniques but there is still more we can do.

Recycling and re-using is how we can help reduce E-waste, there are things we can do to benefit ourselves in the process. Out of date working computers can be re-used with new operating systems, turning them into home entertainment systems and other things. Old televisions can be used in the garden to attract wildlife, storage spaces, aquariums and other handy things. If there is only the last option of disposal available you can dispose of your mobile phones in the marked recycling boxes inside shopping centers, or check with your can/bottle recycling place (they may take more than just cans and bottles).
